Electoral College in the U.S is a group of people chosen as electors whose duty is to elect the president of the United States as well as the vice president. The group is chosen within four years. Voters choose Electoral College members in each state. The total number of electoral votes is 538, and for a win, the candidate requires more than half.

The Electoral College should be abolished as a way of choosing the president and vice president. First, the system results in a tactful voting process. This is because the winning president does not usually have the majority vote of the people. Moreover, the electors are expected to vote for the candidate who is winning. This means political parties that are popular and have a lot of support in areas favoring the two political parties will have an advantage in the final results.

Moreover, the voter is not directly involved in choosing the president because the Electoral College decides. As a result of this, I highly agree with the abolition of the electoral process as it does not reflect on the voter’s opinion. Consequently, the president elected usually does not have the highest voter number and does not represent their political views and expectations as they would want. This makes the voter passive and has no power in choosing the leader of choice.

Secondly, the electoral process advocates and promotes competitive and adversarial politics. This means that the party that wins and the opposition is usually on an uneven ground that they use as a platform to outdo each other. The two parties put more effort into criticizing each other instead of combining efforts to bring forth better fruits for the nation. As a result of this, resources that would have been otherwise used for a good course end up being wrongly used in the process of critics between the two parties.

Moreover, voters are forced to take sides in the non-beneficial adversarial politics. During this adversarial politics, the leader ends up making wrong decisions that do not favor the voters and which may have grievous effects on the nation. This is another reason that makes me believe the Electoral College needs to be abolished to eliminate the adversarial politics. After the elimination of the Electoral College, I believe the parties will put the interests of the people who voted them in and forget about outdoing each other. This would lead to the wholesome growth of the nation as well as political satisfaction for the voters in the grass root levels.

With regard to the two reasons I have explained above, I highly advocate for the abolition of the Electoral College. However, I cannot deny the fact that the Electoral College has some benefits, but its benefits do not fully accommodate the people. It would be, therefore, right to abolish it and welcome other possible ways of choosing the president and the vice president that will involve the electorate more and those that will not be biased.

Conclusion

To sum up, it is evident that if the electoral process were abolished, positive results would be witnessed. Moreover, recurrent problems in the political arena would be solved. Electorates would be more involved in the running of the nation, and their views would be highly regarded.
