Jim, Sonny's favorite brother, who played football, was a superstar in their hometown. Sonny being less skilled than his brother, needed to get something and use it get noticed by his parents. It was a ruse that was supposed to surpass his brother and be better than him. Riley, who was Sonny's science teacher, appreciated his brilliance by motivating him to enter into the science fair. She gave him a book that provided him with more insights on creating rockets helping them to fly even much higher. She also provided Sonny with the resources which were supposed to help him develop the rocket.

Sonny's father, John, provides support to Sonny through the needed supplies and provides him with the area to launch the rockets from beyond the hearing of the townspeople. The valley in which the rockets are launched from was at Cape Coalwood. John desires Homer to be a miner like him, who is the only future he hopes for him. During the process of building the rocket, Mr. Caton helps him in building them. He even stayed past hours and provided help in developing the rockets. Jake was like a father figure to sonny through providing him with emotional advice on dealing with girls, took him to school, and also provided emotional support during emotional moments. He helped Sonny feel better after Miss Riley felt ill.

Some attributes contributed to a large extent to the success of Sonny in making rockets. Jim's determination to achieve the best in life, it drives Sonny to surpass him in being the best. Also, Miss Riley is determined to ensure that Sonny enters the science fair and provides him with a book. The books and inspiration help Sonny get into the science fair. Elsie was supportive of Sonny in his desire to create rockets and supported his dream of leaving Coalwood as soonest. He observes a ray of light in his eyes when she talks about it, and he is excited. She believes that Homer is pursuing a worthwhile course with enough sense of making his own decisions.

Several events contribute greatly to inspiring Sonny to continue with his desire to build a rocket. There was a launch of Sputnik 1 in the Soviet Union heard at Coalwood, which inspired and mystified Homer. He was just a small boy who was living in a stifling small town, and his thought of going to space was mind-blowing. When Sonny blew his mother's fence, it contributed to facilitating him to develop the rockets. Even after blowing the fence, his mother still supported him and urged him to continue with his pursuit of wanting to create a rocket. The autograph on the picture of Werner Von Braun also motivated him to continue with his creation. The launch of Auk XIV was significant after it attained a distance of 3, 000 feet up in the air. The launch demonstrated that he could fit perfectly into Nasa if he put in enough effort in the development of rockets.

In the third Chapter, his mother has a dream which he says, "To get out of here, you've got to show your dad you're smarter than he thinks. I believe you can build a rocket. He doesn't. I want you to show him I'm right and he's wrong. Is that too much to ask?" (44). It demonstrates the power of dreams and the pathway of achieving the theme, which is crucial in October Sky.

"A rocket won't fly unless somebody lights the fuse." ( 419) Sonny is speaking to his father, and it applies to various items. The sentiment explains Sonny's dream with him, allowing his father to be able to try an activity that he was willing to do with his son through lighting the fuse and allowing it to fly.
