Model of Trustee Representation
A trustee model is a scenario in which people from a specific constituency elect their representative to parliament. It is a representative model. People entrust the chosen person with the responsibility of making important decisions for them.
The representative is the trustee of the people and acts in their behalf on both the national and local levels. The representative has considerable autonomy. The duty of an elected trustee is to make decisions in the best interest of the people, while keeping the national interest first (Burke 1996).
The trustee is empowered to make decisions for the people. He can also sacrifice the immediate interests of his constituents to protect the national interest. This is done while he keeps in mind that the trustee was given this trusteeship by the voters who believe they lack the knowledge that the trustee does. They give the trustee this power to act on their behalf.
Delegate Model of Representation
The delegate model is seen as a parallel to the trustee model. It gives the trustee all rights and powers, but delegation views the representative as the mouthpiece for the people.
He does not have the right or power to make his own decisions (Burke 1996). This is representative democracy, and not the trustee model. This model of representation allows the people to elect the delegate who will represent their constituencies in parliament.
A delegate is someone who acts/speaks on behalf of people, such as trade unions and governance. We can see that a delegate is a person who speaks on behalf of another party. This is in contrast to a trustee. He is not autonomous like a trustee (Burke 1996).
Concerning the closing of the huge naval base in my small constituency, it is important to remember that the president's defense spending reform aims at creating a more current national security budget. This objective serves the wider national interest. As the trustee of the people and a senator from this small state, I will support the president's initiative. This is because the closing of the naval base will have a negative impact on the population in the short-term. Economically, I support the president's decision.
I will do this despite the fact that people may not be aware of the long-term benefits of having a current national security. My chances of being reelected will be reduced as a result. With the knowledge of the long-term benefits of the president’s initiative, I will continue civic education on behalf of my constituents in the long-term interest of the president’s initiative.
Delegate vs. Trustee: Conclusion
In conclusion, I voted to support the president’s initiative to close military naval bases that are no longer of critical benefit. Even though it might seem like a compromise for my re-election, and the president's, this is.
In consultation with the president and my party, I will start other projects to compensate for the loss in income due to the closure of the naval bases. This could include setting up a manufacturing facility in the place of the naval base. This will restore the trust of the people in me as their trustee. This will also help me to be reelected and increase confidence among my party members.
