Jim received a football scholarship to attend college while Homer later developed an interest in rocketry. Though the mother supports the dreams of her children, the father is disappointed and rocketry. Parents should allow their children to choose their career paths in life to avoid wasting their talents.
Children have their passions and ambitions in life. Parents should support them rather than imposing careers on them. Homer had a desire for rocketry. This motivated him to research further on the topic and be one of the best in the field. Homer was able to win the national science fair, and this made him a hero in his town. John was one of the best miners in the city. However, his children had other goals in life. Jim managed to win a scholarship because of his football talent while Homer was considered a hero after winning the national science fair. Parents should understand that they must support the dreams of their children. Homer's mother was supportive all through the process and even threatened to leave John and move to the city if he does not support his son. Both Jim and Homer were successful in their field. Through their passion and talents, they were able to win scholarships to colleges. This illustrates the importance of supporting children as they grow and not imposing your interest on them.
Children should be able to respectfully speak their mind and share their dreams with their parents. Homer was courageous to inform his parents about his dreams. Most children do not dare to share with their parents about their goals in life. This makes the parents impose their dreams on their children. Therefore, children should be able to share their interest with their parents. Additionally, parents should behave like Homer's mother and give their children an opportunity to explore their talents. This conversation should be made respectfully, and the parties should be open-minded in the discussion. Furthermore, children should be determined and work hard towards achieving their goals in life. Homer never gave up despite the opposition from his father. Eventually, he was able to achieve his goals.
Conclusion
October Sky is a powerful film that brings out essential lessons to both the children and parents. People should not impose their dreams on others. Both Jim and Homer were successful because they knew their goals in life. Moreover, parents are required to support the aspirations of their children for them to achieve their greatness. Homer's mother encouraged his sons to the end.
