Introduction
Various skills are important for personal success in one's career. Some of the skills are acquired through learning, some in the industry, and others from life experience. The skills that will help me get ahead in the engineering field include problem-solving, creativity, and team working. Other skills relevant and applicable to my field are effective technical skills, the ability to work under pressure, interpersonal skills, and verbal and written communication skills. Engineering is a complex discipline comprising a lot of fields; hence, the need for a variety of skills to complement core competencies.
Problem-solving skills refer to the ability to handle challenging and unexpected situations in the workplace. Engineers are often termed as problem solvers. Therefore, the engineering field requires that practitioners can assess any situation and identify an effective solution. My problem-solving skills have been manifesting in day-to-day decision making. The engineering field, as it comprises many fields, prompts one to meet people from different cultures who collaboratively work towards a common goal. Problem-solving skills come through when I can identify the source of a problem and seek an effective solution after that. More often, problem-solving is the product of active listening, analysis, research, and communication. Therefore, dependability accompanies problem-solving, letting one interact effectively with people from other cultures. I have developed my problem-solving skills by acquiring more technical knowledge, seeking out opportunities that demand the skill, and observing how other people solve their problems. I plan to practice and role-play to continue developing my skills. It is through the skills that I can create solutions to unexpected situations in the globally connected world.
Creativity is also an important skill in the engineering discipline as it assists one to get along with everyday tasks and meet long-term goals. The importance of creative thinking is that one can develop new as well as effective solutions for various challenges that arise in practice. Engineering is an interactive practice that involves the sharing of ideas. Therefore, with creative thinking, I can suggest new solutions and new ways of overcoming various challenges to people from different cultures. Through analytical, organizational, and communication practices, creative thinking can be enhanced in the workplace. Besides, diverse people can review and approach situations from different perspectives through creative thinking. I have gradually developed my creative skills by gathering common information. This involves approaching a situation from almost every aspect before finding a solution. I have also enhanced my creativity through brainstorming additional solutions, along with considering the most obvious process. In my future practice, I will enhance my creativity by taking new undertakings, doing things differently, and listening to the people around me.
Teamwork skills are also vital for my engineering practice. Engineering involves working with other people, including clients, colleagues, managers, and fellow practitioners, to reach a common goal. Teamwork skills are effective in letting people complete their tasks effectively in an enjoyable environment. As individuals in the field interact, a collaborative environment with diverse people from multiple cultures is created. Besides, such an environment can be considered healthy and high-functioning. I have found myself cooperating with other people during conversations, meetings, and engineering projects. I have developed my teamwork skills through opportunities such as responsibility, active listening, and communication. When working with other people, I tend to share relevant ideas, thoughts, and important information to my teammates. In the near future, I plan to improve on my teamwork skills by seeking honest feedback in the areas demanding improvement, setting personal goals by implementing the SMART framework, and mimicking others who have strong teamwork skills.
Problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork skills have been vital in my engineering practice. I have shown gradual improvement in the skills as they apply to my discipline. These skills will let me flourish as an engineer in a globally connected world. I will succeed in my career by effectively applying the skills to seek new challenges and opportunities. With time, I am gradually taking my time to evaluate my skill set and identify the areas of improvement to enhance my competency.
