The oil and gas industry is an exciting field offering a variety of career opportunities. This field involves tapping into the earth's resources and utilizing them to better our livelihood. I currently work in the oil and gas industry, and I would like to become a crane operator in the near future. Crane operators are individuals who use a crane to move various items. Cranes are machines use to lift heavy equipment. My interest in operating heavy machines dates since I was a child which acted as the foundational bases to my interests in becoming a crane operator. Conversely, this context provides the reasons behind my lifelong interest in becoming a crane operator:
The global demand for workers in the oil and gas industry is dramatically increasing, illustrated by the latest technological trends. The industry has employed over half a million people globally, with the statistics expected to rise to one million by 2035. Hence, employees in this field find themselves in different locations, unlike any industry. This will allow me to work with many different people and organizations developing my professional network. According to Cherry (2019), the oil and gas industry is advancing quickly with no signs of stopping, with an expected growth rate of 17 percent (Forest Times, 2019); this creates the perfect opportunity for recruits like me and gives hope for finding a job easily in the modern competitive markets.
Additionally, it is interesting how technology is transforming the oil and gas industry inducing change on hoe the work is done, production of oil and gas as well as creating job opportunities. The oil and gas industry has adopted the use of up to date technologies in order to improve its proficiency and efficiency. This field allows me to gain essential skills in operating machinery as well as knowledge in the sector in the best possible way. Moreover, it quenches my thirst to operate heavy machinery because I'm not interested in office life.
Conversely, the oil and gas industry is referred to as lucrative as it allows its employees to earn more average salary for their roles. Additionally, this field awards lucrative bonus schemes, bonuses as well as numerous financial benefits. According to Forest Times (2019) research, crane operators are paid relatively well compared to other types of machine operators. Additionally, crane operators are paid an average sum of $50, 000 per year.
Although working in the oil and gas field involves long working hours, the same amount of time is also given off work. That means you only work 12 hours for six weeks, then the same amount of time is given off work. This also means you only work half of the year. Additionally, this field allows flexible working hours, unlike office jobs, where you have to report to work from Monday to Friday.
According to research, the oil and gas industry has significantly woven itself in embracing environmental sustainability (Jowett, 2012).. Employees in this field are aware of the land footprint as well as issues pertaining to the industry, such as carbon emissions and water. Hence, this industry significantly assesses its employee's welfare as well as their health, unlike most industries. Also, crane operators are provided with healthcare coverage, including dental, vision, as well as prescribed medical coverage.
Conclusively, I find this career opportunity exciting for me. It provides me with a chance to work with heavy machinery as well as gain knowledge on how to operates different new machinery in the oil and gas industries.
