Introduction
Music production is a creative and artistic practice of producing recorded music projects. Listeners expect to see artistic personality mixed with aesthetics in the music. Therefore, before one settles to produce music, he or she has to make some considerations such as the needed equipment and musical instruments that would enable the producers to create an appealing piece of music. In this era of internet and new technology, production of music has significantly changed. Notably, the use of technology is on the rise. This means that producers not only embrace the new technology, but also borrow emerging artistic features in the production of music. The essence of this development is to win the hearts of the audience and targeted listeners. In other words, producers are conscious that failure to attract the listeners would deny them the opportunity to sell their products. As such, the creation of music scripts involves research on what the audience expects to hear and produce an art piece that makes use fantastic musical bits. In this essay, I would reflect on my role as a producer, audio engineer, sound and lighting controller, and a musician.
Music producers manage and oversee the recording and related activities to produce an art piece that would appeal to the target audience. The primary concern of the producer is whether the production would display the aesthetic appeal and satisfy the desires of the audience. Therefore, the audience is the judge and the consumer of the musical output. Failure to appeal to them will imply that the music production would not sell in the market (Pras and Guastavino 74). In other words, the production that fails to appeal to listeners demoralizes the musician and may destroy the career of the artists. The assumption is that artists, especially musicians thrive when their artistic pieces not only appeal to the consumers but also receive positive reviews. In most cases, the negative reviews in most cases mean that the musician has not succeeded in his or her role.
Producer
My role as a producer is to manage and control the sound as well as shape what comes out. This is a significant role in music production because it determines what would appeal to the ears and whether the music would be deemed as successful or trash. To achieve this obligation, the producer must be a good listener. In essence, the producer is expected to do some things in order to make the music appeal to the people (Pras and Guastavino 78). As a producer, my obligation includes identifying the right kind of bits and sound of the music and ensure that it would fit the intended purpose. For instance, I ensure that the bits used for a particular song fit with the theme or the intention that the song would serve. Occasionally, I experience some trouble in identifying the best out of the available alternatives. Therefore, this means that a producer must have some ability to identify the right taste of the musical audience.
Additionally, as a producer, I also perform rating the music or production to make sure it is appealing. The production process entails producing the best out of the available alternatives. These alternatives are of different qualities, but the producer must be able to rate them and choose the best. This role requires a lot of listening so that one can come up with the best product. Further, as a producer, I am tasked to modify different parameters of music performance. In other words, the music that the people will hear depends on how the producer modifies the various components of music such as sound, rhythm, and tempo among other elements. The quality of the music would largely depend upon the modification that the producer would do. For instance, at some point, the musical composition might require an increased tempo or softness. The producer does all these things.
The producer is also concerned with the composition of the music. Composition refers to creating a script and musical bits. Good music must achieve harmony. This means that as a producer I have to ensure that the sounds from vocal production and instrumentals produce harmony. The sweetest sound that many would like to hear is the harmonious sound. Therefore, throughout the production process, my task is to combine the composition of the instruments and vocal production to produce the sweetest music that would appeal not only to the audience but also to all.
The arrangement and the sound quality are other roles of the producer. The acoustic of instruments can only produce the desired sound when the producer has good ears to listen to them and control and manage the production. The musical instruments are valuable in music when they produce sweet sound for the ears. However, the role of ensuring that the sound quality and the acoustics serve the intended purposes lies in the hands of the producer. From my experience, I have learned that producers tend to pay attention to many details to achieve the desired sound quality. Some musical instruments produce good sound while some do not depend on the mixing done. A good producer would know when to increase the softness of music and when to increase the loudness of the acoustics.
The primary objective is to produce high-quality music. According to Pras and Guastavino (102), having good ears means aptitude of listening and self-control of staying focused and remaining fresh in every situation. Thus, the level of attention that the producer shows affect the quality of the music. This describes why producers need to be more attentive and limit distraction from the things in the production environment. It is always important to train the ears to latent to and pick only right elements and quality of music.
Further, it is imperative for the producers to explore the artistic and technical characteristics of the production. For instance, the performance of music is an art in the sense that it entails displaying of various artistic products. As such, the producers do not stop at the quality of the music, but all the components of the production including its artistic feature. The artistic appeal of the music produces aesthetic appeal. It follows that the producer must also look at the artistic nature of the composition to attract more clients.
Audio Engineering
My role in music production was not only limited to production, but also it extended to audio engineering among other areas. Audio engineering is concerned with coordinating the instruments so that sound comes out of the speakers. The sound travels into various components before coming out from the speakers. For instance, the sound starts from the vocalist when singing through the microphone. The arrangement of the machines suitably used in music production is the sole concern of the audio engineering. Equally, the arrangement of the speakers, microphones, musical instruments and the settings affect the quality of the sound that we hear. In music production, I also played an instrumental role in ensuring that the role of the audio engineer does not negatively affect the production and quality of sound. The arrangement also involves providing that the power connection to the musical instruments does not destroy the functionality of these facilities. Similarly, power regulation is essential in ensuring that the musical instruments and audio instruments do not fail to play the intended roles.
The microphone should pick a quality sound and transfer through the equipment before it comes out through the speakers. My role as an audio engineer involved setting the right stage for the music production to occur. The widespread availability of music does not suggest that it is easy to produce music. Therefore, the process of production is often calculative with the audio engineer and producers regulating the machinery to achieve the right quality of music. Arguably, the sound engineer has an equally important role in ensuring that the arrangement of the equipment brings the desired results.
The audio engineer controls the technical part of music recording. This part primarily affects the entire production process because any faulty arrangement affects the quality of music. Equally, it means that a fault of the technical engineers amounts to the poor quality of music. My role was to ensure that the equipment such as microphones was in good working conditions. I had to test whether they produced the right sounds.
Further, I had to set the microphones, speakers, mixture, and other equipment to produce the desired quality of sound. I ensured that the sound created was clean and sweet to human ears. Most importantly, I believe that without proper setting of the equipment, the sound would not come out as desired hence failed production.
Sound and Lighting
Mixing of sounds from various instruments to produce quality music is, of course, a noble job in music production. In essence, music is all about the quality of the sound. Therefore, it follows that the arrangement of the output is essential in ensuring that the sound produced reflects the quality desired by the producer. During the music production, I played a vital role in ensuring the sound produced was what was expected. The sound is what the audience expects to hear. Thus, I ensured that the recorded music was of high quality decorated to appeal to the ears of the audience. During this music production, I ensured that the instruments and vocalist produced a harmonious sound. Harmony makes the sound appeal to the ears of the audience. I also managed and controlled some of the activities that affect the production of quality sound.
Additionally, I managed activities such as the tune and bits produced by the musical instrument. To produce harmonious sound during this musical production, I listened carefully and tuned the music instruments increasing the loudness of the music to reach the audience (Prasm, Guastavino, and Cance 381). The primary concern was whether the sound came out harmoniously because when the musical instruments are played, they affect the quality of production.
Similarly, I ensured that the vocal production was within the set key. Sound production outside the set key makes the music boring besides creating awful sound to the ears. Therefore, my role did not change only sport at sound production, but I was also responsible for the lightening of the hall. Lighting forms part of engineering roles during music production. The mixing of light tends to affect the aesthetic appeal of the performance. In line with this, my role involved controlling the quality of light that was used in the production. Thus, adding to my experience, I have learned that the intensity of light tends to affect the entire vision and the artistic nature of the production. Combination of colors such as red, blue, white, green, and yellow could be used to convey the mood of the music.
During the production, I mixed the light (colors) that resonates with the theme of the song. For instance, songs that conveyed sadness or terror are best displayed in dark light. This helps the audience to acknowledge the terror conveyed in the theme of the song. A good combination of the colors occurs when one understands the theme of the song and can relate it to the happenings in the environment. A good combination of lighting and sound often bring out the artistic appeal of the music. The illumination should always change according to the rhythm and bits of the music. As the intensity of the bits increases, the flashes of light should also increase and change. I also learned that controlling the lightning is vital in ensuring that the rhythm and theme of the song are in harmony. A good choice of lighting tends to increase the artistic appeal of the music.
Musician
As a musician, I had some roles to play in the production. First, I had to ensure that the vocal productio...
