Introduction
The museum architecture features tall standalone columns that give the illusion of vertical space. The columns are widely spaced and arranged in a manner that offers a straight path through the hallways. The architecture of the museum gives the visitor an idea that it the building had been initially designed for a different purpose probably a school. The architect Jean-Francois Bodin had designed the building to accommodate a large gathering of people.
The columns are also arranged to give as a minimum obstruction as possible. The people inside the museum have an almost 360 view of the artwork around them. The premise makes a good museum because the columns have a small width that ensures little obstruction of the artwork inside.
It is also easy for one to notice the high ceilings. The beams give the illusion of horizontal space and improve ventilation through the room. Just like the columns arrangement, the arrangement of the beams is such that they guide the visitor towards particular artworks.
Probably the most significant trickery is the museum painting. Yes, there are statues outside that give the visitor some idea of what is inside, but the white color immediately erases these ideas. The white color of the outer walls acts as a reset button. It quickly removes any thoughts and expectations from the visitor. The visitor, therefore, enters the museum hallways expecting anything which makes for an excellent exhibition really because the visitors had no preformed image of what they wanted to see.
The white painting on the inside also allows the visitor to focus on the art instead of being distracted by the color of the walls.
The Mathaf museum is a mix of modern and contemporary art. This display style inspires new ideas and supports creativity. For a start, there are few stand-alone arts which allow the viewer to compare and build on the already available image they have viewed.
The modern art and contemporary art are in separate sections which allow for a confident mood to build up. The design style allows the viewer to focus on one aspect of art and build on it as he or she moves through the pieces. It can be the color, line, form or texture.
Although the wall color is part of the architecture, it also works its way into the display style. For example, the white color of the wall works to enhance the effects of the art displayed itself. On some sections, the wall color is grey which is a dull color therefore suitable for hanging bright colored paint.
The museum room is relatively dark except for the art display areas. The lighting has been focused on the art pieces to draw the attention of the visitor towards the paintings.
The columns are the only physical barrier that a visitor is likely to encounter in the museum. The rest of the spaces is open with two display tables standing side by side. The open area allows free movement of visitors through the room.
The two display tables are complementary to the art on the walls. The display tables are housing other art forms whose color slightly varies from the contemporary art forms on the walls.
Conclusion
Overall, the display style in the museum influences the visitors thinking by finding similarity between very diverse aspects of life while at the same time showing the difference between very similar elements in life.
For an ideal visitor, the display style gives them a home feeling even though they have might have traveled from afar. It allows the visitor to look beyond their diversity and find similarity and a connection with the art pieces.
