Introduction
Communication is the means through which information is sent from the sender to the receiver. It determines how human being interacts with each other. Human beings are social animals, and communication is the process through which they socialize.
Communication Process
The main elements involved in the communication process are the sender. It is the person from whom the message is coming. The message itself forms the idea of being sent from one person to the other. Encoding is the third element of communication of the message. The channel through which communication is done is a critical part of the interface. On the other end of the conversation is the receiver. The receiver has to decode the message. After decoding the message, the receiver gives feedback to the sender (Vyas, 2015). Feedback is the last element of communication. When communication is useful, it has a positive impact on human relations and the intended goal. It impacts positively on the organizational culture when the manager effectively manages communication with the employees (McQuail & Windahl, 2015).
Common Barriers to Communication
A common barrier to communication is language. The language barrier is when the receiver and the sender use different forms of language to communicate, and in the end, the message is not well-received (McQuail & Windahl, 2015). In my own experience, the line supervisor explained the work plan for the day to all of us in the packaging store in English. One of our colleagues was a German who did not understand the entire communication by the supervisor. He ended up not doing as required for that day's packaging. There was a language barrier.
Communication and Leadership
Effective communication helps in improving human relations. As a leader communicating daily with my colleagues on various matters can help strengthen our relationships. An open way of communication where a message can come from both ends and in the process, creating an opportunity to exchange ideas on various matters. The increased competition and dwindling economic environment have made it necessary for organizations to work on their communication (McQuail & Windahl, 2015). For example, in Carrefour supermarkets, communication helped improve service delivery through enhanced customer engagement, effectively removing the barrier to communication. Interaction between supermarket staff and the customers became a regular and productive activity.
Conclusion
Organizations need to ensure effective communication channels are available. It helps reduce work conflict and loss of business. Improved human relations have a positive impact on the competitive ability of the company.
