Imagine waking up one day and finding yourself a citizen of another country. What would be your reaction? Now imagine you-you are given a chance to choose between the citizenship of that country and America. How differently would you react? I would love to know what is on your mind. Maybe you would be pleased and choose the other country but as an American citizen, what would be your contributions towards Making America Great? Who would you blame for the issues you think your mother country has? Leaders, or you?
The power of Grit is something that cannot be ignored, and it is unimaginably self-fulfilling once you finally achieve the fruits of Grit. Grit is the act of holding on to something or someone, staying loyal to it with passion and perseverance without letting go off smoothly. It could be your business, your studies, leadership position, etc.
To make America grit again, we need to have leaders with Grit and citizens with Grit. It is possible, teaching our kids when young on the importance of Grit as you real asset will give birth to a whole breed of citizens full of passion and perseverance. So the other day I bumped into my very long friend Kelly, and we had a long conversation over a cup of coffee. Through many exchanges, I realize Kelly has three well behaved and talented boys. I love to chat about kids, and so Kelly completely grabs my attention. She talks about her first born son who is now in the University of California. So I ask, "What is your son talented in?" and she responds, "Jimmy is a great boxer since he was a small boy." She continues to say, "I exposed him to a variety of games and I realized he loved boxing so much and therefore made sure most of the time he was trained and spending more time on boxing more than other sports." I could not hold myself from nodding because I was impressed. She also said, "I have all along made sure that despite having passion for the game that my son persevered all the challenges which come with boxing without changing the games." Kelly hinted to me that the young boy would be signed a national boxer soon and sincerely with that discipline, passion, and perseverance, the sky cannot be the limit for the energetic young man. Wow! Isn't that what we all want for our kids? Isn't that good parenting? What if all parents instilled the virtues of passion and perseverance in their kids? America would be full of loyal citizens with Grit.
Looking at the economy of America, as citizens, we are capable of refining it. If we all persevere in our areas of expertise with or without making significant returns. Then eventually our business would breakeven and contribute vastly on America's Economy. When most if not all the America's population is gritty. This reminds me of a guy in his mid-thirties who camps in the neighborhood to borrow money. So he approaches me with that face full of hope. And I decided to have a chat with him and get to know the reasons he does what he does. He responds,
"Mum, I quit my job since it was too demanding and mounted too much pressure on me, including longer working hours." He goes on to state that he was hoping to land a better job, with better terms but nothing has materialized. Who does that? He had neither passion for his career nor perseverance. He forgot it rains everywhere. I mean who wholly comfortable and satisfied at their workplaces? I am not, do you? Grit is what keeps us going. Grit is what has kept some of us if not all of us in our jobs for a long time. We whine and rant at times, but we do not give up because it is not an option. According to Jack Ma, who is the founder of Alibaba and the most successful entrepreneur of all time has always emphasized on the need to persevere and be patient with growth. Alibaba did not grow in one day; their profit did not break even in a single day. Jack ma simplifies, "It takes at least thirty percent of your time to create foundation when building your house....Alibaba has not completed laying our foundation." What I am trying to imply is that we can only make America gritty again by laying the foundation, which is us.The foundation for a gritty country is gritty citizens.
Achieving Grit, consistency is critical. You cannot say you are gritty, and you open your business irregularly. The intensity is what matters.Even in your bad days, still grid, have the hope for a better tomorrow but switching from one job to another, one business to another and also talents looking for a quicker way of achieving the goals will tire your soul, exhaust your hopes and you will give up. A great example is that of the influential South African Nelson Mandela. He is a definition what Grit encompasses. The passion he had for freedom was unstoppable such that despite all the struggles and pain he still could not give up until South Africa attained racism and liberty ended. Now that is the best example encompassing passion and perseverance .you can create your story
Conclusion
Finally, my country people, we need to stay true to our course and ourselves. If you possess, Grit makes use of it, be passionate, persevere, and work on that talent. If you have less degree of Grit, there is always room for improvement. Let's all hold hand s and do what we need to do in our different fields. If it is parenting, let it be the best you give to your kids. You are working, deliver the best you can and if you are a leader, be the best to emulate by you flock or rather your juniors. We can make America gritty again.
