Like many YouTube channels, Veronica Wang uses both connotative aspects and denotative aspects to make her YouTube channel a success. The connotation is entailing the use of several cultural and social meanings and their implications; it is both the emotional and imaginative aspects that relate to a channel. On the other hand, denotative is the literal meaning.

The use of both the connotative and denotative aspects of the channel makes it one of the most loved food channels. Such aspects display deeper meanings about the presentations depicted in the video. Broadly, this assignment will, therefore, analyze how Veronica Wang has succeeded in employing various film techniques to achieve both the connotative and denotative meanings of the channel.

Semiotics

The use of the semiotics elements has enabled Veronica Wang’s channel to succeed by garnering a higher viewership. The Semiotic is a way of explaining how an audience can make meanings from the codes. In this case, all the encoded meanings generate deeper meanings. This strategy is based on the principle that there are no words without meaning, as it is impossible to read and see something without linking it to specific ideas—Veronica

Wang channel employees’ numerous examples of these. In one of her videos titled “Giant Spicy Rice Cakes & Jjajangmyeon,” Wang is seen preparing a giant dish and munching it. To date, the video has millions of views, with the majority of people being attracted by the specific elements presented in the videos. For example, Wang is seen preparing a spicy rice cake through a demonstration that denotatively portrays a proper cooking technique that results in tasty food.

Throughout the video, the audience can recognize that the right cooking style and recipe allows people to prepare food in ways that meet their nutritional requirements. Thus, a denotative meaning, in this case, revolves around the importance of better cooking methods. The use of Jjajangmyeon as one of the foods or spices gives a more significant meaning to the nutritional values associated with Korean food. In reality, the Jjajangmyeon is a

Korean-style Chinese noodle dish that is topped with a thick sauce that is made of the Chunjang, diced pork, as well as the vegetables. While it is evident that Wang intends to inform her viewers about the critical aspect of Jjajangmyeon’s preparation, the audience automatically develops a feeling and ideas regarding how nutritionally good is the food. In this sense, the audience can develop a strong attitude of attraction towards Chinese or Korean foods.

Indexical Sign

In a recently uploaded video titled, “Canadian Mcdonalds Mukbang” utilizes the significant elements of the Indexical Sign technique. Ideally, this technique forms an integral part of nearly all the videos that Wang presents in the channel. Broadly, Indexical Sign involves the act of using the existing knowledge to connote a given meaning that is widely known or accepted by a group of people. In the channels, Wang has succeeded in using the color of the foods being prepared as a tool to inform the audience about the authenticity in tastes of the foods being prepared or consumed in the video. Wang utilizes the Maillard reaction that gives the browned food its distinctive flavor. The various food depicted in some of the videos have a brown color and include the Seared steaks, fried dumplings, toasted marshmallows, and the bread, which have all been subjected to under this reaction. Thus, the browning of food appears to portray another deeper meaning about the tastiness of the food being prepared and presented in the video.

The brown color is also critical in giving a connotation regarding the health importance of the food being prepared. Not only the taste of the food can attract you but also the color. The brown color has been linked to various foods with incredibly authentic tastes, and which can meet the needs of the consumer. The technique of incorporating this aspect in the majority of the videos has a significant impact on the number of people who access them and even subscribe to frequent video updates. The color thus plays a critical component role in eliciting the positive feelings of the viewers toward the food prepared.

Narrativity

This is another technique that has been widely used in numerous videos in the Veronica Wang Channel. This refers to the extent to which media conveys a story. The media, also known as the storyteller, recounts an event following the sequence that leads to a transition from the initial stages to the outcome. In our case, it involves how Wang as succeeded in offering the description of every content she uploads in the channel. Such a story is not only crucial in enhancing the understanding of the audience about the purpose of the videos but also why the audience needs to embrace the teachings. In one of the videos titled “Large Fried Sausage & Spaghetti Recipe,” Wang offers an exposition about how to fry a Ukrainian sausage deep and to make homemade sauce for our spaghetti. Denotatively, Wang tours her viewers through various procedures and cooking techniques needed to prepare the Large Fried Sausage and Spaghetti. A more significant meaning than just the mere demonstration is even generated in this case.

The fact that the dish prepared originates from another culture, Ukraine, in this case, makes many people attempt executing the recipe based on the outcomes in the video. Ukraine has long been described as one of the countries with diverse cultural aspects when it comes to the preparation and consumption of its traditional food. The food in these cases has been mostly thought to be authentic and most delicious. This is an idea that Wang, through her video channel, does not intend to portray or inform the audience. It is an idea that automatically develops in the audience mind the moment they come across the food that has their origin in Ukraine.

Accelerated Motion

Accelerated motion, which is the opposite of slow-motion, is when the shot looks like it is moving at an extraordinarily fast speed; it is the effect of running the camera at an abnormally slower speed when shooting a scene. In most of her videos, Veronica Wang employs this method; this is commonly true at the beginning of her videos. Wang has been successful in employing this technique in her videos for various reasons. One is to fast track scenes where she thinks there is no need to go into details. Another reason is to give a glimpse of what the video is all about, and this is when the technique is used at the beginning of the video.

The video can be accelerated in editing, with there being no need whatsoever for mechanical preparations at the time of the shot. Veronica Wang uses this technique to speed up moments in her videos that are self-explanatory. In action films, accelerated motion is used to speed up awkward moments in crash or fight scenes, most of which the directors have not had the time to stage such scenes.

Ellipsis

This is a way of omitting part of a sequence of events, allowing the viewer to fill in the details. It suggests an action in film making, by simply showing what happens before and after what has been observed. Wang employs this technique, too; she uses it to get rid of actions that do not add value to the narrative. Veronica Wang’s videos are mostly short films of not more than 40 minutes with some exceptions. She uses Ellipsis to make the videos shorter while giving the audience all the necessary information required. She has been successful using this technique with most of her short videos getting many YouTube views.

Tone

As described before, the tone refers to the quality within the voice expressed by the speaker through feelings or thoughts. In most cases, it is projected towards the person whom the conversation occurs to. Ideally, as used in a film, a caption can either be sympathetic, annoyed, or angry. A change in either low or high voice can completely change the meaning of a sentence. The application of this film element forms an integral part of the Veronica Wang Channel. In the videos, Wang employs an affectionate and admiring tone that plays a critical role in attracting the viewers, even if they did not want to take a tour of such presentations.

Intonation

To effectively pass her message home, Wang utilizes an efficient variation of the tones, which mainly constitutes to intonation. It is critical to note that intonation is majorly employed in movies or films to bring about distinguishing features of spoken word and tone, attitude, and emotions of the speakers. Thus, its application in the channel can elicit the positive feeling of attraction and emotions of the audience towards the demonstrations and videos.
