Jane the Virgin is a romantic TV series whose main cast Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez, 23 years old) accidently impregnated through artificial insemination. Meanwhile Jane starts getting attracted to Rafael Solano (31-year old) who is a married man but childless and biological father of the unborn baby. Other characters include Andrea Navedo, Petra Solano, Gloriana Villanueva, Michael Cordero (Jane's 29-old husband), Alba Gloriana Villanueva, and Rogelio de la Vega.
Sharing of information and dealing with challenges of life are largely determined by family hierarchies and alignments. The issue of hierarchy can be seen in the relationship between Jane's mother on one hand and that of Alba on the other. Jane regards her mother with authority and their interactions are formal in that private issues are rarely shared. Such relationship makes Jane struggle to explain this to her mother about the pregnancy. Conversely, Jane respects her grandmother highly but shares some of the most private issues of her life. They both share their love experiences with ease and discuss life issues openly.
The relationship dynamics in Jane's family are both healthy and unhealthy. When Jane does not gather enough courage to face the mother, it becomes unhealthy as it denies the daughter and opportunity to share her troubles with her parent. Assuming that Alba was not around, the inability to share her challenges could cause psychological issues which may in turn affect individual health negatively. However, the relationship can also be regarded as healthy because it enables Jane to chat the path of life on her own. She decided to be a virgin following the bad experiences of her mother who got pregnant at 16. It, therefore, the sharing of information cultivates individual independence which helps Jane to cope with life challenges.
Jane plays the role a generation trapped in two different worlds. The mother represents the liberal generation while the devout grandmother denotes the conservative society in Jane's life. There is antagonism between the two aspects of the storyline.
Enmeshment has been created in the relationship between Alba and Jane. They both discuss sex matters openly and share their experiences. As such, one can rarely see a boundary between the grandmother and Jane.
The communication may be considered to take chain or network patterns. Whereas there are leaders in the name of the mother and grandmother, Jane communicates with the other through chain avenues while the Alba interactions assume network patterns. The two patterns are defined by hierarchy. The relationship between Gloriana, Jane and Alba form the family triad.
