Civil Engineering Cases

Giving in or Giving up

Ashton realized that for the company to obtain building permits in one of the countries in East Africa, bribery is common and expected. The Code of Ethics for engineers does not allow one to receive, solicit or offer either directly or indirectly any money that will influence the award of a contract or create any political contribution. The moment Ashton knew that the only way to win a contract is through bribery is the time to walk away from the case. This case is unlawful and illegal in the United States because it this case is documented and the company found to have bribed foreign officials, Ashton will be jailed and the company fined millions of dollars.

The company becomes better off when it has policies and Code of Ethics, but the policies and codes of ethics are being there does not keep the organization ethical, it is the people in the organization that will argument ethical credibility. Transparent, practical and responsible operational and management practices are fundamental when dealing with corruption and bribery. Failure to accommodate this in the ever-expanding regulatory requirements provides a significant inducement for participants to proactively manage corruption and bribery in the engineering industry.

A Marshland's Fleeting Flourishing?

The main role of Solomon is to advise his client on the risks and liabilities when conducting projects but more importantly to preserve the environment. Even though the client has come up with a cost-effective solution that is satisfaction, it has already proven to have a certain percentage of contamination in the environment. Solomon should be in a position to push for a sustainable strategy that protects the environment even though it might be more fiscally demanding. As an engineering consultant, it is mandatory to put the public interests above all others. This latter philosophy brings about sustainable development emphasizing more on economic instruments and valuation to achieve environmental protection.

The conflict between self-interest and public should be persuaded and follow the Engineering Code of Ethics that is synonymous with human progress. The Code of Ethics requires engineers to put business interests and professional interests before public interest. A revolution in ethics is expected to extricate the great moral pride that justifies the market as the prevalent basic leadership apparatus in our general public. It is farfetched to anticipate that designers will show higher moral direct than is the standard all through the network in which they live. Sustainable development, with its talk of intergenerational value, is in all actuality a method for embracing market profound quality and is insufficient to the arrangement of current environmental issues.

Unintended Effects

One of the Code of Ethics of engineers is that they should engage and partake tasks that they are qualified by experience and training or one which they can be reasonably become qualified with proper education, preparation and training without deceiving the public. The professionalism of engineers is to provide solutions where they are needed and for them to provide technology to the community that does not need it, then it means they did not solve the problem. Jack is already aware that he has the mandate and responsibility of providing a simple and more efficient solution to the community and diving into large projects will lead to negative impacts.

This case can be compared to a doctor treating a patient with a different disease yet he/she is aware of the patient's conditions that can be treated easily. When engineers use their professional knowledge to create other negative impacts to the environment then it becomes rightly outraged. As a professional engineer, Jack is expected to exhibit the highest standards of integrity and honesty, strive to serve the public interest while adhering to their highest principled of ethical conduct.

Off the Clock

The company is using job security for employees as a way of forcing them to work more than 8 hours to meet the organization demand. Sarah is in the managerial position she has not many powers that will influence the final decision of the organization she has the power to propose and push for this problem to be addressed. Since this culture of illegal practice has already been accepted in the organization, Sarah has to first talk to the chief executive officer about the case outlining the ethical dilemmas that the organization is facing.

Sarah has to explain to the chief executive officer that work ethics translates into the positive attitude at work. Having good work ethics means that the organization values the opportunities and sacrifice its employees are putting to ensure that the organization is productive and profitable. The ability to work must give employees independence and freedom without worrying about the security of their jobs. This will positively influence their attitude towards work realizing that their roles and responsibilities are a treasure. The organization has to create an environment that is favorable and comfortable for its employees where they value their employees as a treasure but not a slave to their profession.

Computer Engineering Cases

A Violation of Privacy

Even though others may have the belief that privacy is valuable and important, it is good to accept that there are ways that can be implemented to collect a vast amount of data to help promote the common good. Human beings always strive to protect the privacy of their personal sphere of life. This means that they always to have control over people who should know about them. This means that they do not accept any person to access their personal information at any time. The application that Marcus build helped track than keep records of patient's medication information, medication and doctors' appointments. The reason for this application was not for the purpose of data collection but rather for data storage and retrieving when needed.

Even though this technology my Marcus has a major impact on dissemination, retrieval, gathering and storage of information the ethical question that comes related to manipulation and accessibility of information. It is mandatory for Marcus to set up security features that will be used by both the doctor and the patients to access the information. It is also good for the engineer to advice the hospital to come up with a policy agreement that patients will be given to either accept or deny the use of their personal information.
