Duties of Correction Officer

The duties of a correction officer are to supervise inmates in jails and ensure that prison inmates follow rules that have been set. They also have a responsibility to enforce laws and order by ensuring that prison inmates comply with the law. They also have a duty to inspect cells and other locations to prevent the inmates from breaching the law (Garland, 2002). There are other duties, which a correction officer must do, and they include record keeping and patrolling by ensuring that all the number of inmates is present.

Roles of a correction officer

Correction officer has a role of maintaining law and order so that there is no breach of the law and to ensure there is no violation of somebodys rights. They also provide security and ensure that prisoners stay in a healthy place without violence. Correction officers patrol physically and inspect prison yards and other places to maintain welfare of prisoners. In addition, they maintain surveillances to monitor the activities of inmates (Dinsmor, 2003). There are other duties such as inspecting and conducting searches prison buildings and cells to look if there is any contraband goods and also to assess if the prisoners are complying with the their regulations. Furthermore, correction officers enforce security procedures that are set to correct the conduct of prisoners.

How does their role influence or impact the criminal justice system?

The roles of correction officers have a positive impact on criminal justice system by ensuring that that there is no violation of the law and increase the efficiency at which justice is obtained in judicial system. Correction officers also, supports in the rehabilitation of inmates by ensuring that they do the right thin either in the cells or in prisons (Garland, 2002). They also participate in correcting the behavior of inmates by enforcing law in prisons, monitor the activities of prison inmates to ensure that they are orderly, and act in a manner that is acceptable by the community.

How do they work collaboratively with other agencies in the criminal justice system?

Criminal justice system only has three processes for a case and they include inception, trial and finally punishment. The correction officers must therefore work collaboratively with others agencies by ensuring that there is proper investigation before hearing. Throughout the criminal justice system the protection officer, ensure that the accused is safely handled and their rights are protected (Garland, 2002). The correction officer collaborates with other agencies by balancing the needs of criminal justice system to carry out investigation and to prosecute the accused by adhering to their fundamental rights. They also ensure that they execute their duties as prescribed by the law and this increase their collaboration with others.

What do they believe to be the cause of crime along with what would deter crime?

Correction officers believe that crimes are caused by greed, anger, revenge and pride. They also believe that some crimes are caused by the desire for personal gain or the desire to minimize risks. Correction officers are certain that desire for material gain can only lead to property crimes like robberies but desire for control, revenge and others are likely to cause violent crimes (Walker, 1992). Correction officers also believe that crimes can be deterred through punishment so that the crime committed can be less attractive. They also believe that most crimes can be discouraged through imprisonment or loss of income as this is able to reduce the opportunity available.

Why have they chosen to work in the criminal justice field?

Most correction officers say that they chose to work in the criminal justice system to reduce crime rate and to support in rehabilitating the conduct of some people. They also say that being a correction officer is a passion but not a duty and that is the reason why they chose that job.

What did you learn from this experience?

I learnt that correction officer play a very important role in the society by ensuring that the rights of the accused is protected and also ensure that justice is obtained in a criminal justice system. I also learnt that correction officers are just a good job that is able to provide satisfactory work environment which most of them enjoy.
