Various grounds cause divorces such as infidelity since in most jurisdictions only approve of monogamous marriages, Emotional and physical abuse, addictions such as gambling or drugs. Many nations have divorce laws that stipulate and provide clear guidelines on the divorce process and its aftermath, such as issues pertaining distribution of the couple's property or how they share their debt burden. In instances that the couple had children, divorce legislations guide on child support, legal child custody, and access to children. Children whose parents' divorce get likely to face some adverse detrimental experiences since they get caught up in the emotional and psychological distress emanating from the divorce. Divorces involve couples with their marriage bonds seeking to resolve their irreconcilable differences and hopefully find peace and happiness in life, although it has some adverse detrimental impacts on the divorcing couple's children.

Divorce often gets characterized by significant transitions in life; for married couples with kids, it involves having to separate kids from one parent through claims of child custody. Divorce repercussions vary across different children since their emotional attachments and dependence on the parent losing custody vary. The emotional distress resulting from divorce has adverse psychological and emotional effects on children, and research states that some of these effects are short term while others prevail to their adulthood years, manifesting negatively into their romantic relationships. Divorce negatively impacts the psychological effects and experiences of children. Such effects include constant stress, anxiety disorders, and disillusion amongst children raised in divorced marriages. Divorce instances leave children feeling guilty since they think and consider themselves the reason behind the divorce. It results in immense feelings of guilt and severe repercussions, such as low self-esteem. Divorce may result in anxiety disorders. These disorders are prevalently high amongst young children compared to older ones since they are heavily dependent on their parents. Divorce may result in distress, and hopeless disillusions since, at the onset of divorce, children tend to feel disregarded and keep hoping their parents will resolve their marital indifferences. Divorce leaves children feeling detached from one parent; thus, they lack comprehensive emotional support.

Divorce negatively alters a child's social life, behavior and may trigger a child into getting violent or experiencing anger issues. Children whose parents are divorcing may lose interest in social activities or find it difficult fostering and maintaining healthy relations. These children feel insecure, have fewer friends, and alienated from those whose parents are in happy marriages. Most children from divorced marriages have unresolved conflict and may quickly get angry for minor issues. It exposes them to high probabilities of indulging in rebellious, violent behaviors that can easily result in their indulgence in crime.

Divorce may result in a child's poor academic performance and socio-economic position. Divorce involves changing a family's dynamics and social construct. Most divorce cases are characterized by intense family disputes and child custody cases, which significantly alters a child's happiness and ability to concentrate on their studies. A drastic academic drop in the child's grades impedes the child's college learning and prospective career (Garoo, 2019). Divorce hinders a child's social relations with other students, which have a negative impact on their studies.

Divorce may result in a child's trouble in future relationships and their loss of faith in family and marriage ideologies. Children brought up in divorced marriages develop doubts in family values and experience trust issues in their romantic relationships. Studies indicate that their propensity to divorce gets high by a more significant percentage as children that get raised from non-divorced marriages (Garoo, 2019). Divorce hampers their ability to maintain social relationships.

Children raised in divorced families are prone to indulgence in drug and substance abuse. Research indicates that prevalent teenagers raised in divorced marriages channel their emotional baggage and frustrations into alcohol and substance abuse (Garoo, 2019). Depression and other psychological disorders are prevalent amongst children raised in divorced marriages.

In conclusion, divorce involves major psychological and social transitions since it consists of the termination of a marital bond. Divorce has adverse detrimental effects on children since it exposes them to emotional, mental, and social distress that increases their probability of indulging in drug and substance abuse. Parents should mitigate the effects of divorce on their children by revealing an impending divorce and ensuring they actively stay as involved parents even after the divorce.
