I took a month to travel to Japan for study purposes - it was the first time I had traveled abroad alone. I had gone to visit Tokyo, located right in the center of Japan. The city is vast and densely populated and has one of the most efficient transport systems I have witnessed. There are JR lines that are conveniently placed for people to walk on, which not only discourages people from using motorcycles but is also very beneficial to the environment.

Before embarking on my vacation, I had taken some time to learn a bit of Japanese to heighten my experiences in Tokyo. I was able to find a welcoming family to stay with, and their house was terrific. The family comprised of a father, a mother, and three children, who were all very kind to me. The mother was a housewife dedicated to tending to her children. Her food was exceptionally delicious.

During my stay, I encountered international students from diverse nationalities such as England, Canada, Russia, and the Middle East. Each one of us was excited to learn Japanese. It was exciting seeing people with green or blue eyes and red or brown hair speaking Japanese. Whenever we were not studying, we would join together doing various activities. For instance, the teachers would give us a tour around Japan where we also got to learn a lot about Japanese culture. Tokyo revealed a mix of traditional as well as an ultra-modern cultures. There were numerous neon-lit skyscrapers on one side and historic temples such as the Imperial Palace and Meiji Shinto Shrine on the other. The Tokyo National Museum also showcased exhibitions of some beautiful classical arts.

Some exhilarating moments were having meals together where we enjoyed many Japanese delicacies, which were very foreign to me, such as Sashimi, Kaiseki Ryori, Tonkatsu, Sukiyaki, tempura, and Shabu-shabu. Sukiyaki was especially intriguing to me because the chef would prepare the thin slices of beef mixed with vermicelli, tofu, and vegetables right at the dining table.

Conclusion

My stay in Japan was exceptional because it broadened my horizons by introducing me to new cultures. I had the opportunity of encountering a lifestyle that I had only seen on television and had only heard of. My vacation to Japan is one that I will never forget, and that showed me the way to explore new places and cultures.
