Technology has been adopted widely in all areas of the globe especially in the preceding three decades. The impacts of such modern technology on the ways of life of the affected populations are still being felt, especially with the young generations of today. These impacts are widespread, with the most pronounced effects being seen in the learning skills of the new generation scholars. Perhaps less mentioned however, is the impact of such new technology on the critical thinking skills of the affected populations. Critical thinking is defined as the ability to reason, make reflections and drive to logical conclusions based on knowledge and previous experience.

The impact of technology such as the modern mass media on the thinking skills of the young generations of learners has been widely debated in recent times. Social media has changed the way we communicate today as compared to how similar communication was done in the past. Formal means of communication for instance has been largely replaced with more modern and efficient means in today's world. Thus where formal letters were used in the past to deliver messages across different levels in an organization, these day we have Whatsapp, Messenger and the likes, where messages are delivered promptly and shared among the concerned parties through live streams, videos and pictures. This new means of delivering information eradicates most of the formalities that were common place with the traditional avenues. As a result, critical thinking skills such as evaluation, written communication, questioning and imagination are constantly suppressed in favour of the new technology (Gerardi, 2017).

Furthermore, the advent of social applications such as Alexa, Siri and the likes have contributed a lot in the diminishing critical skills among not just learners of today, but also the general population due to the widespread adoption and use. The past decade for instance has seen an increased uptake of such applications that are capable of disseminating critical information with the aid of the Artificial Intelligence technology. These applications are capable of searching for, retrieving and delivering information on virtually any topic of interest in no time at all. All one needs to do is to open the application and name the topic, and the rest is left for the app (Gerardi, 2017). This creates an environment where there is a lot of ease in accessing information, consequently diminishing the traditional research methods employed to get access to the same information. As such, essential critical thinking skills such as memory, evaluation, and observation, judging skills and argumentative skills consistent with the traditional methods of research are eradicated.

Recent studies on the impacts of new technology on the critical learning and thinking skills among the general population also suggest the existence of an inverse relationship with diminished IQ. This is brought about by the simplifying effects of the new technology, which have a declining anatomical function on the brain. The ease of accessing information as accorded by the new applications lead to reduced enrichment of the brain, which consequently decrease the learning ability. The outcome of course is the decline in the peoples' ability to formulate logical concepts, design and employ reasoning skills in problem solving as well as interpreting arguments and developing intellectual individuality (Gulevska, 2014). Such outcomes can be prevented by creating innovative ways to counter the over-reliance on these applications in disseminating information to the public.

On the other hand, the advent of the new technology has its own positive effects on the critical thinking skills of the masses it touches. For instance, the new technology not only enables learners to access information easily but also retains this acquired knowledge by keeping them more engaged on the topic. Scholars argue that due to the interesting manner in which the information is delivered to the learner, the high level of engagement that results from the experience increases their interest in the subject, giving them an opportunity to improve their critical thinking skills. In addition, the new technology allows learners to collaborate with others during the learning process, allowing them to gather other opinions in real time, thus improving their perception as well as scope of knowledge at the same time. Motivation is thus increased, leading to an overall improvement in the critical thinking skills of the learner (Sandi, 2019).


The rapidly changing world of technology has brought with it numerous changes as we have seen in the discussion. These technologies have both positive and negative impacts on the critical thinking skills of the people it affe3cts as discussed. Among the negative impacts is the reduction of critical thinking skills due to over reliance of applications such as Alexy and Siri to gather information on topics of interest, which diminishes traditional research methods. Also, the diminishing of the average IQ among populations as well as eradication of formal means of communication and expression skills are some of the impacts of technology. On the other hand however, the efficiency brought about by the new technology also allows for improved critical thinking skills due to the interest it generates in users.
