IntroductionPsychology, as a branch of science, has gone through some changes to what it is today. The field deals with how individuals behave as well as think in certain conditions or environments. With every aspect of psychology, the goal remains the same, including describing mental processes and behavioral patterns in humans as the brain is a crucial organ in facilitating how human beings think and act (Biswad-Diener, 2018). Different scholars have made various contributions to what psychology is today. Their contribution led to theories that people implement in various aspects of life. Among such individuals is Abraham Maslow, who was instrumental in the development of factors that lead to motivation. Many organizations today effectively use Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a way to influence and motivate their employees towards achieving success.
Abraham Maslow Influence on Psychology
Humanistic psychology is one area of psychology where Abraham Maslow's contribution had the most effect. As a result, the development of the hierarchy of needs was vital to influence some of the individuals' behaviors. Maslow's contribution to humanistic psychology was first introduced during World War II after experiencing the adverse effects of the battle. The interest of Maslow's contribution to humanistic psychology was based on both personal and shared experiences (Selva, 2019). The development of the hierarchy of needs was key to establishing the factors that contribute to motivation. One unique feature of the factors is that they are all used in the same scenario despite different scenarios. The use of such elements is based on the fact that all human desires are similar despite the magnitude of the matter at hand.
Maslow identified five needs that are key to motivating any individual. The needs include physiological, safety, belonging, esteem, and self-actualization arrange in a hierarchal manner according to the importance of need from the lowest to the highest. From Maslow's point of view, one needs to fulfill one need for him or her to move to the achievement of the next need. On achieving the self-actualization needs, an individual would have achieved full motivation in regards to the situation at hand. The needs have played a significant role in how individuals conduct themselves, especially in an organizational setting.Many organizations use Maslow's hierarchy of needs to motivate their employees. Motivating employees represents one of way influencing their thinking and behavior towards achieving the organizational goals and objectives. Organizations have different ways which they use to make employees achieve their needs. For instance, the physiological needs represent the needs for aspects such as food, shelter, food, which are vital to any employee at any organization. Most companies provide a conducive working environment for their employees for them to achieve their physiological needs. As far as the safety needs are concerned, most companies ensure that they provide their employees with job security measures among them, including long-term contracts. The application of the hierarchy of needs theory in many organizations has led to desirable and positive performances by such companies.
In summary, psychology has evolved over the years to what it has become today. Among the individuals who have made a positive contribution include Abraham Maslow for developing the hierarchy of needs, which is part of humanistic psychology. The theory is based on the achievement of some needs from an individual perspective to get motivated. The use of Maslow's hierarchy of needs has been vital in improving the performances in most organizations by motivating employees. Companies should continue to utilize Maslow's s hierarchy of need theory effectively to continues posting desirable results.
